Union Condemns Militancy, Honors Ibru Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), Abuja chapter, Saturday condemned the spate of kidnappings by militants in the Niger Delta region. Chief host of the occasion and first managing director of Delta Steel Company, Aladja, Dr Fred Brume, the said this at the annual Urhobo Day celebration. Brume described the kidnapping of the wife of Chief Humphrey Idisi, an indigenous oil magnate, in Port Harcourt last week, as an embarrassment to the citizens of the area. According to him, the prolonged detention of Idisi's wife is becoming a serious concern to the Urhobo's. "People are asking why a fellow Niger Delta, who is not engaged in politics or stolen public fund, be subjected to this manner of attack, and humiliation. "Shall the Niger Delta be torn apart by a 'dog eat dog' phrase of inter-ethnic warfare, we certainly reject that" he added. Maj. Gen. David Ejoor (rtd..), who chaired the occasion, had earlier urged all Urhobo's in the country to unite and speak with one voice. Ejoor, a former chief of army staff, noted that the UPU was formed to bring the Urhobo people together under one umbrella. High point of the occasion was the presentation of awards to prominent sons and daughters of Urhobo kingdom who distinguished themselves in their various professions. They included Olorogun Felix Ibru, the President-General of UPU and first governor of Delta state, and Major Gen David Ejoor, who honored for his outstanding contributions to Delta and Nigeria in general.
