Suspected ritual killer dies in mob action

A SUSPECTED ritual killer was killed in a mob action on Sunday in Ekpan, Delta State while attempting to kill a two-year-old girl.

The suspect, and another person now at large, who posed like madmen under the Ekpan Bridge, near the NNPC Housing Estate, attempted to kidnap the girl and use her for ritual purposes.

The two men were sighted by a palm wine taper on a palm tree, who raised alarm,  attracting passers-by and a commercial motorcyclist to the scene.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the prompt intervention of the palm wine taper, saved the life of the girl, while one of the suspects was caught.
Check of N60,000 was found with the suspect and this provoked “jungle justice” by angry members of the public against him.

Two small huts, built with palm fronds beside the river, suspected to belong to the suspects, were searched and various items recovered.

The items included a blood stained female school uniform, note books and a Bible with the name, Mr. Okoro Onome of Federal Government College, Warri, written on them.

The Bible also had a lot of addresses and telephone numbers written on it while other items found in the huts were pots, native eggs, food stuff and feathers.

The cyclists later handed over the child to policemen, who were attracted to the scene by spontaneous violent demonstration by members of the public against the madmen.

The District Police Officer (DPO) in Ekpan, was said to be away but sources close to him confirmed the incident.
They also said that the rescued child had been taken to an un-disclosed hospital for medical check up.

Ritual killers in Warri and Effurun have always pretended to be mad persons and are mainly seen around bridges.
In 2004, a mad man, caught in a hut near the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), confessed, after severe beating, that he was not a madman but a native doctor, who specialized in human rituals.

Although the man was later killed and Warri and Effurun were rid of madmen, two years later madmen resurfaced in the cities gain.

Most people, who spoke to NAN about Sunday’s incident, called for the removal of madmen from the area.
“It seems to me that they have a covenant because immediately they are caught, they become real mad,” one of the residents of the city said.
