Reps ask Navy to vacate Sapele port

The House of Representatives yesterday passed a resolution calling on the Nigerian Navy to move its Engineering Training College from the Sapele Port in Delta State to the Naval Logistic Centre under construction in Oghara.

The House gave the Navy an ultimatum of 15 months to effect the relocation.

The House also wants the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the commercial Seaport to be allowed to “takeover the port facilities with a well-planned take-over program aimed at the restoration of a full-blown commercial activities”, in the area.

It also submitted “That there is an urgent need for an inter-governmental and Community relations initiative by the three tiers of government aimed at ensuring harmonious relationship between the personnel representing each tier.”

While presenting a “Report of the Committee on Marine Transport on the Under-Utilization of the Sapele Sea Port and Abandonment of the Facilities at the Sapele Sea Port”, Rep. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (PDP Enugu), said “while an oversight of the Sea port, we visited the traditional rulers at Sapele and they agreed that you cannot have military installations located side by side with the community settlements.”

Rep. Ugwuanyi, Chairman of the House Committee on Marine Transport, while giving a background on the situation, said the continued presence of the Institute in the area would worsen the militancy in the area and lead to clashes between the Community and the Nigerian Navy.

He disclosed that oil thieves had since the Administration of Former Military President Ibrahim Babangida, taken over the Sea Port.
