Posted to the web recently WARRI—IMODJE-OROGUN oil producing community in Ughelli-North Local Government Area of Delta State, which raised apprehension, recently, over a suspected illegal dumping of toxic waste by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in the company’s Well 33 in the
community, is demanding a N2 billion compensation from the company for the consequential threat its exploit has caused to the ecosystem and life of the people. The Aforhe (brain) of Orogun kingdom, Chief Emmanuel Ogbobene who is a member of the committee, inaugurated by the monarchy to liaise with Shell to discontinue the illegality and pay damages the people told Vanguard, weekend, that a letter, demanding the said compensation had since been forwarded to the company. According to him, “We are also making efforts to contact the International Bomb Energy Commission in the United Kingdom for an assessment and to tell the world tectonic future soil movement in the community”. Chief Ogbobene said soon after the Orogun people raised alarm on the dumping of toxic waste in the Vanguard newspaper, the company sent some of its officials unobtrusively to the site in the night to evacuate its caravans, compressors and other equipment, leaving the Christmas tree. He said the N2 billion demand for compensation should not be misconstrued because “the amount is small compared to the continuous damage that is presently taking place, awaiting the days of calamity, which can only be prevented by Shell re-sucking all the waste from our soil and this re-sucking must be supervised by the community to ensure proper clean-up.” Besides, he said the community, which would take appropriate legal steps to compel Shell to re-suck the waste its soil wants a complete cementation of the so-called dry well by the company as well as an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) repot on the site before it would be allowed to remove the Christmas tree. |
