House Committee Queries DESOPADEC's Budget Proposal

The Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has queried the lopsidedness of the 2008 budget proposal of the commission.

At a budget defense meeting in Asaba, the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Monday Igbuya, queried the commission's proposal, which was put at N30.1 billion. Out of the amount, N7.2 billion was set aside for recurrent expenditure and N22.8 billion was earmarked for capital expenditure. Among the oil producing communities, those in the Ndokwa Council area are to get N1.774 billion, those in Isoko, N2.786 billion while Urhobo land had N3.694. The oil producing communities in Itsekiri lands are to get N5.472 billion, and those in Ijaw speaking areas, N5.405 billion.

The chairman observed that the projects were not evenly spread among the Urhobo communities. The lawmakers representing some of the Urhobo communities, Mr. Harvest Igben, Mr. Solomon Ighrakpata and Talib Tetite complained of the imbalance of projects among the Urhobo communities.

The lawmakers, however, called for a redress of the problem. The chairman of the committee also called for a collapse of some subheads in the budget proposals, to give prominence to other pressing projects
