Delta plans IPP projects to ease power shortages
Written by
JOHN UWE, WARRI

Delta State government has unfolded plans to establish two independent power plants (IPPs) to boost power supply among other measures that could fast-track the economy of the state.

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, stated in Asaba Monday that the establishment of the IPPs will be in partnership with the private sector, saying that his administration is determined to make the economy of the state private sector-driven.

Uduaghan noted that at the inauguration of the Delta State Vision 2020 and 2020 Starring Committee, that one of the IPP shall be established at Asaba to take care of the Delta north and another in Warri to serve Delta central and south.

"The energy crisis in the country is a great concern to all and the state government is addressing this shortfall on two fronts. One is our active collaboration with the Federal Government on it’s power emergency program. We have promised some leeway when this program comes to stream. The other is through the state’s independent Plans in Delta north to Service Asaba and it’s environs and another in Warri to service the south and central parts of the State," he stressed.

The governor added "we have also developed our own Gas Master Plan, aligned to the Gas Master Plan of the Federal Government, which will act as a catalyst for the overall development and industrialization of the state. Ours will entail the construction of about 1,112-Kilometre gas transmission pipelines, taking advantage of the gas platforms and pipelines that run all across the State".

Uduaghan also state that the plans of government in participating in the gas sector is coming on the heels of the fact that "the feedbacks from investors in both local and international road shows, have been very encouraging".

According to him, "this administration wants to build an economy away from the vagaries of the oil industry. It is a major part of the arduous task before this council and committee. Oil is an exhaustible resource. Its damages to the environment and the neglect of other sectors it has created, are sources of concern to this government. I have in this respect, begun the campaign of shifting emphasis away from oil to other sectors of our economy".

He charged the 78 members of the Vision 2020 and the 48 members of the Starring Committee to focus more on Agriculture, solid minerals, culture and tourism, develop industries to service the oil sector, how to produce highly skilled people to reinvent Delta State and how to explore the vast opportunities of the creeks, rivers, sea and seaports.
