COLUMN THE Delta State Government, yesterday, restated its commitment to guide and protect the survival of traditional system of administration at the grassroots level as it presented staff of office to the “Okpara-Uku of Orogun”, HRH Otagba Eferobome I.
The State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan who stated this in his goodwill message at the ceremony, said the traditional institution remains one of the enduring bedrocks of their culture. Uduaghan said: “This understanding informs the great respect that the Peoples Democratic Party–led administration continues to accord our royal fathers. “On behalf of myself, the Government and people of Delta State, I commend the people of Orogun for managing the peaceful succession process for the Okpara-Uku title of this kingdom. It is our expectation that all sons and daughters of this kingdom will rally round the Okpara-Uku to make a success of his new assignment.” Continuing, the Governor who spoke through his Deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama, advised all communities with recognized traditional rulers to cooperate with their royal fathers, adding that incidents of hostility and lack of respect for the throne could retard the growth of the community. While urging the monarch to give priority attention to matters concerning security in his domain, he enjoined him to work closely with law enforcement agencies and the Local Government Council to ensure the security of lives and property. Earlier in his address, chairman of the Ughelli North Local Government Council, Mr. Kenneth Ibru appealed to the monarch to reciprocate government’s gesture by working with other kings and help Government to reduce or get rid of vices such as youth restiveness, corruption and violent crimes.
